These Quarterly Institutes are offered 4 times a year on the second weekend of the following months: January, April, September, and November.
Introduction to Inquiry Methods Description:
This workshop will provide formal educators with an opportunity to explore how inquiry-based teaching strategies can be used in formal classroom settings to increase student’s understanding of core science and math concepts. Participants will work directly with Saint Louis Science Center staff trained in inquiry-based teaching methods to build confidence and comfort towards this hands-on approach to teaching and learning. Project-Based, Student-Centered Description:
Participants of this workshop will discover how project-based classroom experiences provide students with concrete contextual learning and opportunities to scaffold preciously taught science and math based content. As educators work with Saint Louis Science Center staff to develop strategies for implementing physical explorations and investigations within their respective classroom, opportunities to address variations of student’s learning styles and skill levels exists. Building Literacy Skills through Science and Math Description:
Educators participating in this workshop will discover a variety of ways to support and deepen student’s math and science understanding through the integration of literature experiences, including children’s books, poems, short stories, readers theater and journaling. Wonder and Wow: Meeting Learning Objectives through Informal Science Education Description:
This workshop will showcase the value of informal education strategies and how they can best support the teaching goals and objectives of science and math educators. Saint Louis Science Center staff will work with participants to pull “wonder and wow” experiences out of current classroom curriculum, and develop ways to use informal teaching strategies to best fit grade-level expectations. THE MAGIC HOUSE
A Taste of Science Preschool–Grade 2 Description:
This popular workshop is designed to “whet your appetite” for making hands-on science an important component of the early childhood and primary classroom. The workshop examines four thematic units in depth: the environment, kitchen chemistry, the scientific process and the five senses. Teachers gain hands-on experience while exploring activities that emphasize science process skills, and focus on active learning and sensory experiences that are easily integrated into your present classroom curriculum. Storytime Science and Math Preschool–Grade 2 Description:
Once upon a time, educators participated in a workshop on how to bring science, math and literature connections into the early childhood classroom. Employing favorite children’s books as a springboard, teachers will gather new ideas on using story time to integrate basic hands-on science and math activities into the preschool curriculum.
