Fall 2006 Challenge - Recycle!
Increase Paper and/or Aluminum Can Recycling!
Beginning in fall, schools are challenged to increase recycling rates for the 2006-07 school year. To encourage schools to make the most of their fundraising potential, in addition to recycling as much as possible, each school that participates in the Abitibi Paper Retriever Program and/or the Recycle Challenge aluminum can program, has been given a recycling category and a recycling goal for the 2006-07 school year.
The top three schools in each category will win a high quality park bench constructed of recycled plastic lumber.
This challenge is one of the many that Saint Louis County Department of Health (DOH) is offering to help raise awareness of their 50% waste diversion goal by the year 2010.
Eligibility
Public and private schools located in Saint Louis County that participate in the Abitibi Paper Retriever program and/or Recycle Challenge aluminum can program. Schools that participate in both programs can win two park benches.
Challenge Time Period
The time period for the challenge is the 2006-07 school year. Tonnages reported by Abitibi and the Recycle Challenge between September 1, 2006 and May 31, 2007 will be used to determine the top three schools in each category.
Categories
Five paper-recycling categories and one aluminum-recycling category have been designated. The categories were designed to help schools move into the higher cash incentive rates offered by both Abitibi and the Recycle Challenge. Schools with one Paper Retriever bin were broken down into 3 categories (Bronze, Silver and Gold) based on their average paper tonnages as reported by Abitibi between September 1, 2005 and May 31, 2006.
Bronze: One Paper Retriever Bin Schools - 50% Challenge
Schools averaging 0-10 tons are in the Bronze category and must increase their paper tonnage by 50% in 2006-07 to be eligible. The top 3 schools in the Bronze Category will receive a park bench.
Silver: One Paper Retriever Bin Schools - 50% Challenge
Schools averaging 11-20 tons are in the Silver category and must increase their paper tonnage by 50% in 2006-07 to be eligible. The top 3 schools in the Silver category will receive a park bench.
Gold: One Paper Retriever Bin Schools - 50% Challenge
Schools averaging 20+ tons are in the Gold category and must increase their paper tonnage by 50% in 2006-07 to be eligible. The top 3 schools in the Gold category will receive a park bench.
Platinum: Two Paper Retriever Bin Schools - 30% Challenge
Schools with two Paper Retriever bins are in the Platinum category and must increase their paper tonnage by 30% in 2006-07 to be eligible. The top 3 schools in the Platinum category will receive a park bench.
Titanium: 3+ Paper Retriever Bin Schools - 20% Challenge
Schools with 3 or more Paper Retriever bins are in the Titanium category and must increase their paper tonnage by 20% in 2006-07 to eligible. The top 3 schools in the Titanium category will receive a park bench
Aluminum: Recycle Challenge Schools
The category for Recycle Challenge schools is based on an incentive called "Can-Do" that is new this year. To achieve "Can-Do" status, a school must average over 300 lbs. a month. The top 3 schools that reach "Can-Do" status, as reported by the Recycle Challenge in the 2006-07 school year will receive a park bench.
Notification
Winners will be notified in August 2007 and the benches will be delivered in Fall 2007.
